Sulphur Storefront Grant Testimonial: Christy Morris
“Receiving this grant was a powerful reminder that we were not alone in rebuilding,” Christy Morris, owner of The Mix Mercantile in Sulphur, Oklahoma, said. “It showed me that others believed in our vision and cared about seeing our business return to the heart of downtown. After losing our original building, there were many moments of uncertainty, but the grant gave us encouragement, hope, and the reassurance that our efforts mattered to the community.”
Morris, along with many other business owners, was devastated by the destruction of the EF-3 tornado that ravaged downtown Sulphur and other areas in April 2024. Morris was thankful to receive much-needed funds through the Sulphur Storefront Improvement Grant from the Chickasaw Foundation.
“The grant allowed us to move forward with key architectural improvements that we may not have been able to afford otherwise,” Morris mentioned. “Adding the windows not only improved the curb appeal of the building but also increased safety and visibility. Having this support eased the financial pressure of construction costs and enabled us to prioritize making the building both functional and inviting.”

The financial support provided some optimism for Morris. “The grant truly renewed our sense of hope during the rebuilding process. Knowing that there was support behind us gave us confidence to keep pushing forward, even when challenges felt overwhelming. It reinforced our belief that our business is an important part of the community’s fabric and that restoring it was worth every effort.”
Funds extended through this program also gave Morris the opportunity to expand. “This support not only helped us rebuild but also gave us the confidence to dream bigger. What was once a single business will now become three—we are bringing back our boutique, launching a bridal/prom shop, and opening a restaurant,” Morris explained. “Thanks to the grant, we were able to take an important step in creating a building that can support this growth, helping to bring new energy, opportunity, and life to our downtown area.”
As it relates to the actual building, Morris is thrilled with the rebuild. “The improvements have been transformational for both our business and our community. The addition of windows to the east, street-facing side of our new building completely changed the look and feel of the space. Our previous building did not have windows there, but the architects recommended them as a way to create more light and openness. They were right—the new windows make the storefront brighter, more welcoming, and more inviting to customers.”
Even more, Morris said its improvement go beyond just the building. “It has given our community a sense of pride to see a once-closed corner brought back to life with a design that reflects progress and resilience.”
