Artist Grant Spotlight: TJ Harkins

Artist Grant Spotlight: TJ Harkins

“The assistance from the Foundation made it possible for me to participate in two Native art markets that I would not have been able to attend otherwise,” said TJ Harkins, a recipient of the Chickasaw Foundation Artist Grant Program. “The grant helped offset essential costs such as booth fees, travel, lodging, and materials, allowing me to focus fully on presenting my work at a professional level.”

In addition to financial assistance, these funds helped with gaining exposure as an artist. “Attending these art shows provided valuable exposure to collectors, galleries, and fellow Native artists,” Harkins said. “I was able to build meaningful connections, receive direct feedback on my work, and increase visibility for my artistic practice.”

Harkins also mentioned other ways these art markets are important. “The markets also helped strengthen my professional experience, expand my network, and opened doors for future opportunities, including commissions, collaborations, and invitations to apply to additional shows.”

“The support from the Foundation was not only financial but also affirming. Being selected for the grant reinforced the importance of my work and encouraged me to continue developing my artistic voice,” Harkins noted. “Participating in these Native art markets strengthened my confidence as an artist and deepened my commitment to sharing stories and perspectives through my art.”

Harkins added, “I am grateful for the Foundation’s continued investment in Native artists and cultural sustainability.”

Though the Chickasaw Foundation Artist Grant Program is finished, we were glad to assist Ms. Harkins and many other Chickasaw artists like her.
